How to get into clinical research in the UK

Ten steps from "I think I want to work in research" to your first day in the role, plus three bonus steps I could only write from the inside.

It took me a full year from my first application to the job I wanted. I wrote the first version of these steps before I started my Clinical Research Assistant role, and now that I am inside, they have not changed. What has changed is how I would coach you through them, because I now see what research teams actually look for.

The path is the same for everyone. Where it differs for your background, the guide has a route box just for you.

The ten steps

  1. Decide this is actually your laneYou cannot build a strong application for three careers at once.
  2. Have one honest conversation with someone already doing the jobJob adverts tell you the duties, not the reality.
  3. Know what they are scoring, then do your GCPEvery NHS application is scored against the person specification.
  4. Learn what the jobs are called, the bands, and how to keep your registrationJob titles blur together, and applying blind costs you.
  5. Check the sponsorship question firstIf you need a visa, it decides which roles are realistic for you.
  6. Rebuild your CV for research, not for your old jobA shortlister should not have to work out why you fit.
  7. Write your supporting statement against the person specificationIn most NHS applications, this decides whether you are shortlisted.
  8. Set job alerts in the right placesIf you only search LinkedIn, you will miss most research roles.
  9. Email the named contact before you applyAlmost nobody does it, so the ones who do stand out.
  10. If it is not converting, get inside the buildingResearch teams often hire people they already know.

Bonus: from the inside

  1. Skills that make you hireable on day oneWhat you can show now, and what you will be taught.
  2. The interviewShow you understand research, safety and the team.
  3. Your first 90 daysGetting the job is the start, not the finish line.
